2010 Census

SEWA-AIFW, Inc. is a Census Community Partner and a part of the Asian Complete Count Committee in Twin Cities. It is important that South Asian communities participate in the 2010 Census so that we become part of the new portrait of America.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Census form, please feel free to call or email us.

We will be distributing Census promotional products throughout the community and at our office in the coming months. We have pill boxes, passport wallet, and temporary tattoos. If you are interested in getting some of these for your upcoming event, please contact us via email, info@sewa-aifw.org.

What is the 2010 Census?

  • The Census is a count of all residents living in the United States including citizens, immigrants and immigrants without status.
  • The Census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution. Individual information is kept confidential and, by law, is not shared with any other government agency.
  • The Census is taken every 10 years.
  • The 2010 Census will take place on April 1, 2010.
  • Census questionnaire forms will be sent to every address in the nation in mid-March
  • For the first time in history, it will take less than 10 minutes to complete the form.

Why do we have a Census?

  • The Census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution.
  • Minnesota currently has 8 congressional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Census data is used to determine each states’ allotment of congressional seats. Due to population changes, Minnesota may lose a seat if people fail to participate in the 2010 Census.
  • For every 100 Minnesotan who fails to complete the Census, the state loses over $100 million in federal funding over the next 10 years. The Federal Government uses Census count to determine how to distribute federal funding to states. States then use the same Census count to further distribute to cities, counties, and NGOs.
  • Businesses, governments, schools and non-profit agencies use Census data for planning programs, land use, businesses and services. Census data tell us who our customers are, where our students will live and what our greatest needs will be.

It is against the law for the Census Bureau to share individual information with any other government agency such as Immigration or IRS, nor to non-government agencies. This is to encourage people to respond so that we get an accurate count. In-Language Census Information
